What type of yoga do you do at Shri Yoga?
The teachers at Shri Yoga come from diverse backgrounds. While each teacher adds his/her own unique approach to the practice, what we share in common is our methodology. In yoga we align on many different levels to experience the most that yoga has to offer. For this reason, we know that when we enhance our physical alignment we enhance the flow of energy and breath, and ultimately our connection to self and others.
Recognizing that this is a process, our classes are leveled.
Foundations: includes Beginner to Continuing classes
Enhancement: Includes Continuing to Intermediate, and Mixed Levels classes
Expansion: Includes Intermediate to Advanced.
The poses and sequencing of the poses are designed for the level and type of the class. To find a class that is right for you, we encourage you to read over the descriptions or call to speak with us directly.
What is the difference between Hatha and Vinyasa?
A Hatha class could be defined as a linked sequence of poses. When approached consciously, an element of 'flow' is created when movement, breath and mind come together. In a Vinyasa class, we maintain that same element of 'flow', but link the sequences together with Sun Salutation. Sun Salutation is a sequence of poses that moves one breath per movement. The class moves between holding poses and flowing through Sun Salutation. This takes the already active Hatha class to a more challenging level of physicality.
I have never done yoga before. Where is the best place for me to start?
It is recommended that new students start in the Hatha classes to acquire a basic understanding of the alignment principles, poses and breath. The Beginner Hatha series is designed for new students, and students who may be restarting a practice.
I am athletic and have a good sense of body awareness. Do I need to start in a Beginner class?
Preferably yes. Having greater body awareness may help your initial experience of yoga, but athletic training can create imbalances in the body that leave some muscle groups inflexible. Moving into the body through yoga is unlike any other physical activity and will initially be challenging. Establishing a foundation of the alignment principles and the breath will enhance your experience. Maintaining a Beginner’s Mind throughout your yoga journey will be key in opening new doorways to help you align with your fullest potential.
What should I bring?
Bring along a yoga mat, towel, and water. If you do not have a mat, you will need to rent one for $1.00. It is highly recommended for all students to purchase their own mat. The mats we sell on site are higher quality mats. Not all mats will be appropriate and some mat surfaces may be slippery.
What should I wear?
Dress comfortably in lightweight, breathable clothing that you can move freely in. A closer fitting top is also recommend as a loser fitting top will get in the way. The environment will be warm, so do not overdress. Exceptions to this are the Gentle, Silver Age yoga, Prenatal and kids' classes.
How do I sign up for class?
Most of our classes are on-going classes which mean that you can drop into any class at any time. Payment for class or class card will be required at that time. If you are new please plan to arrive about 15 minutes early to fill out a Health Form.
Some of our classes run in a series, which means that you will be required to sign up in advanced. SYWC reserves the right to cancel a series if the minimum number is not met prior to the start date, or close a series if the class limit has be reached. For this reason, it is recommended that you sign up in advanced if you are seriously interested in a series class.
Our on-line services also make it easy for you to create your account and make payments on-line prior to coming to class. The 'Shop Online' button will direct you there.
How do the Class Cards and Monthly Unlimited plan work?
Class cards allow you to purchase multiple classes at a more discounted rate. The on-line system will keep track of class status and may be reviewed by you at any time by logging onto your account on line. You will receive an automated notice when your class cards runs low. There is a one-year expiration on the class cards. No extensions, no exceptions. Cards are non-transferrable.
The best investment for those with a regular and consistent practice is the monthly unlimited. Taking just 3 classes a week, the price per class is reduced to $8.25. For those who attend 4 -5 days a week, it only gets better. In order to offer this reduced rate to you, the monthly unlimited plan is set up as an automatic monthly withdrawal for 12 months, which may be started anytime during the month.
For those who desire a monthly unlimited option, but prefer to start and stop as desired, we now have a 30-day unlimited class option. This will start on the day of purchase and will expire 30 days after.
